Anenih open new vista for female basketball
The Women Foundation of Nigeria,(WFN) Invitational female basketball championship held fom May 3 to 7 in Abuja, which the First Bank Elephant Girls basketball club of Lagos won the coveted price may have come and gone, but its memory have continue to linge.
It will be recalled that three out of the four top teams at that championship (First Bank Elephant Girls, Dolphins and First Bank Blue Angels) are from Lagos and all three teams have vowed to renew their rivalry in the Lagos City League which dunks-off on Tuesday. Feelers from the camp of these teams point to the fact that the Mrs. Josephine Anenih sponsored Abuja WFN championship have prepared them for the challenges of the City league, which is more keener than the Abuja championship. For many basketball fans the WFN invitational championship was an eye opener that after all our female basketballers have what it takes to compete at the highest level with Col Sam Ahmedu’s Dodan Amazons becoming the most improved team of the tournament with a win over Energie of Republic of Benin to send warning signal to other big teams in the country that they have what it takes to compete among the ladies. Dolphins chairman, Wale Aboderin described the WFN championship as the best thing that has happened to Nigeria female basketball in recent time, he went further to eulogies the gesture of Mrs. Anenih for investing in the development of the female-child using basketball as a benchmark. He urged the women leader of the ruling Peoples Democratic party, PDP not to relent in her effort at lifting the image of female basketball in Nigeria to the next level, that the competition brought succour to the looming face of female basketball and players in Nigeria and neighbouring Republic of Benin. Mrs. Anenih who has pledged to continue the sponsorship of the championship says the next edition in 2006 will be bigger in terms of funding for the teams and players, she however, enjoined the female-child to make the best use of her potential in a positive manner that will bring glory to her family and country. 0
