Nigeria sticks to sprints

Ahead of the FINA World Swimming Championships in Montreal ,Canada in July, Nigeria will send only swimmers in the sprint events cutting accross the sports specialties- backtroke, breast-strokes, butterfly and freestyle.

The 11th FINA World Champioships hold in the Canadian city, July 17- 31 involving all events including diving, synchronised swimming, water polo, open water swimming and swimming.
By tradition, Nigeria has always fielded athletes only in swimming. This championships may not be different from the past.

Lucky Asemota, assistant secretary, Nigeria Swimming Federation disclosed in Lagos that athletes were being entered for the sprints events men and women saying the federation has already made notification by numbers to the organisers in Montreal.

"We are entring athletes in the sprints in men and women events. These are area of comparative advantage to the country. Nigerian swimmers specialise more in the sprints and so, we are not thinking of breaking more bounds for now."

" We have sent notification by number to the organisers as required. Thwe next thing is to send entry by name when we would have agreed on which athletes to enter based on their prevailing performance time per event," he said. Asemota would not say who may make the list when asked.
