WFN Tourney: Elephant Girls, Dolphins for finals

Tournament favourite of the ongoing Women Foundation of Nigeria, WFN Invitational Basketball Championship, First Bank Elephant Girls proved book-makers right by qualifying for the grand finale of the championship adjudged as a model for female basketball competition in Africa in grand style.

The coach Adewumi Aderemi tutored side over ran hapless AHIP Queens basketball club of Kano 52-11 points (18-05), (16-05), (13-00) and (05-01) in the first semi finals of the championship taking at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Abuja National Stadium, Dolphins on the other hand defeated Firts Bank Blue Angels 40-21 points of 10-05, 11-06, 04-04 and 15-06 to set the stgae for an all Lagos team finals billed for Saturday, May 7, 2005 by 4.30Pm local time.

The Wale Aboderin girls started badly when it lost its first group-A game against the Elephant Girls by a whooping 57-16 points making it to look impossible to go far in the championship only to bounced back winning its remaining four group games against Energie of Republic of Benin (37-19), beating Dodan Amazons (47-22) and posting a major victory over Delta Force many had tipped to reach the semi finals (27-20) before inflicting a 44-29 points defeat on G T 2000 basketball club of Kaduna.

Elephant Girls on the other hand rode roughshod over all its group-A opponents with emphatic wins before going past the Kano based AHIP to set the stage a final showdown against their arch city rival, Dolphins.

The third place match between Blue Angels and AHIP comes up by 3.00PM.
