How Dolphins lost in Abidjan

Dolphins Football Club put up the worst performance ever for a Nigerian side in recent times as they got knocked out of the CAF Champions League by ASEC Mimosas of Abidjan on 24 April, 2005 at the Houphet Boigney Stadium, in Abidjan.

Coming into the game with a two goal cushion from the first leg,  Technical Adviser, Musa Abdullah employed a rather bizarre formation, Playing five defenders, one midfielder and four attackers against an  ASEC side that played a 4-3-3.

With just eight minutes gone into the game, Yakubu Attah, failed to  head a pull out after going up in the air, confusing both the Goalkeeper, Austin Brown and central defensive partner, Ahmed Abdulrahman, leaving Diefonye Vincent De Paul to  flash home a volley for the first goal.

The goal increased the confidence level of the home side as they  Continued to press on but Dolphins just pushed them back from their goal area.  In the 20th minute, Dolphins first shot at goal came through Victor  Babayaro who connected a pull out from Kelechi Osunwa that went wide.

Three minutes later, Endurance Idahor made a twenty yard run from the  center circle but shot wide at the edge of the box.  Kelechi Osunwa tried his individual skills at the ASEC Defence on  thirty minutes but after leaving three defenders for dead, Ojobo lost concentration in the six yard box and was easily dispossessed of the ball.

At the start of the second half, Dolphins lost the plot as they left  the task of qualifying for the group stage in the hands of their

Goalkeeper, Austin Brown. Four minutes after the restart, they had keeper Brown to thank as he  stopped a sure goal from going in after scorer of the first goal let  one go in the six yard box.

Brown again was called to duty as the ASEC again walked through the  Dolphins defence, leaving the goalkeeper to rescue the ball from the  feet of ASEC attacker.

With just three minutes to go, Brown again saved from point blank  range with the defence falling asleep and with a minute to full time  Brown goes down injured after making a frantic  effort to once again to save the club.

Dolphins made two changes in the second half in a bid to strengthen  their midfield, bringing Uduak Udofia for Ochuko  Ojobo in the 58th and Ezeji for Jacob in the 69th minute.  Efosa Eguakun also came in for Kelechi Osunwa in the 81st minute.

With the game ending 2-2 on aggregate, play went straight into penality with no extra  time and Endurance Idahor lost his kick while all ASEC players scored  theirs.

In the ninety minutes duration of the match,  Dolphins had only three  shots at goal, all of which went wide, and got no  corner kick.
