God and Athletics's been good to me--Onyali

Mary Onyali
Athletics:
Undoutedly one of Nigeria's foremost sprinter, Mary Onyali-Omagbemi had seen it all in a career spanning over two decades and littered with great rewards and few disappointments. Haven won Olympic medals, athletics meets, and a staggering number of Nigeria and Africa Games medals it was a rewarding run for this wife, mother and sprinter.

Sadly, onyali saw a last shot at the only medal that eludes her (World Athletics Championship medal) go up in smokes in Paris last August (Nigeria and indeed Onyali was stunned to see a mass protest and boycott by Nigerian athletes depriving her an appearance in the relays) thus dimming any hope of winning a World's medal.

With no sign of discomfort she told Nigeriasports website then via e-mail that " Too bad what happened in paris had to happen, It's a pity my dream medal had to die like this, but I believe God knows the best" after the Paris Game.
Speaking few weeks after her triumph at the just concluded All Africa Games in Abuja, where she emerged as the overall most valuable performer (Winning four gold medals) and leading Nigeria to her first position ever in the history of the All Africa Games, the eloquent queen of the track was thanful to God again.

"I believe everything that has happened in my career has the touch of God, I am glad I am being used by God as a living testimony of what faith can do in our lives" she said in a spiritual tone.
"Everything I won in Abuja is to my little daughter for her understanding and all the glows to my husband for being a loving man I have come to know, I am happy to be alive and that is more important than any regret inside of me" the Africa 100 and 200metres champion told nigeriasports.com website.
