Ibadan stands up for boxing

The ancient city of Ibadan would come alive this weekend as boxers from the 36 States and FCT, Abuja converge for the National Boxing Open Championships taking place from the 3 - 5. Francis Gbiri, Secretary General of Nigeria Amateur Boxing Association (NABA) told nigeriasport.com in Lagos.

Gbiri said the aim of the championship is to select boxers that would represent country at the forthcoming African Zone three Boxing Championship scheduled for next weekend in Accra, Ghana.

"This is the second time Ibadan will be hosting a boxing championship this year. First was early in January when gold and silver Medalist at the 14th National Sports Festival - Abuja 2004 were invited for the D’Rovan Invitational Boxing championship,"

Gbiri told nigeriasports.com Gbiri stated that all invited boxers would fight in different categories which are; light fly Weight(48kg), Fly Weight(51kg), Bantam Weight(54kg), Feather Weight(57kg),Light Weight(60kg), Light Weather Weight(64kg), Weather Weight(69kg) Middle Weight(75kg), Light heavy Weight(81kg), Heavy Weight(90kg), and Super Heavy Weight(+91kg).

He told nigeriasports.com that, "this is our early preparation for the four years programme for boxing since we’re rated first in Africa. It is essential we maintain that position, anything short of that means Nigeria is in trouble."

"We have a lot of programmes scheduled to keep our boxers busy throughout the year, but the only thing that might affect the execution of this programme is funds. For now, little or no attention is given to other sports except football, this is why other sports in Nigeria are suffering."
