Banking giants, Standard Trust Bank Plc, has joined the growing list of corporate organisations that are partnering with the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBof C) and the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) African zone towards the organisation of the 'Return of the Warriors of Africa' multi-title boxing fiesta scheduled to take place next month in Lagos.
According to the Vice President of the WBO (Africa), Ms. Irene Cole, "We're set on rebuilding the foundation of the game in Nigeria, at least for the first time in 15 years, we'll have new judges and ringside judges trained in a partnership with support from Standard Trust Bank."
Cole further revealed that, "we intend to have more regular boxing fight to expose these officials who we expect to grow with the new heights and vision adding that we are set to make boxing the most important source of joy, living and income."
In another development, NBB of C Secretary, Trigo Egbegi said, "about 23 persons including some ex-international boxers would be involved in this enterprise. They will be certificated and licensed by both the WBO and the NBB of C for the first four stages."
On computer scoring, Egbegi said, " "computer scoring is for the amateur boxers while at the professional level, we are comfortable with manual scoring than relying on the computer. I don't see the use of computer's as a scoring equipment in the near future in professional boxing."
He cited that it is easiers to cheat with the computer when a fight is on than the manual scoring.
Meanwhile, Messrs Adonh Bertin, a WBC licensed judge and Nicholas Djidissi, an ABC/ABU judge/referee, both from the Republic of Benin are the instructors of the weeklong training programme and all participant at the judges/ringside judges course would be awarded certificate on the 26th March 2005 at the NBB of C Secretariat at the National Stadium Surulere, Lagos.
