Any mercy for Nku?

There seem to be no ending to the controversy surrounding Nigeria’s sprint star, Mercy Nku, who was dropped by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) before the just concluded All Africa Games in Abuja.

Amidst all the hullabaloo surrounding her role in the World Championships in Paris debacle (Unconfirmed reports says she instigated the boycott of other athletes) Nku who holds the record of being the fastest African sprinter and the defending champion of the 100metres, was bitter over the outcome of events in Abuja.

“I believe I am being maltreated even though we had sorted the Paris incident before the Abuja games,” she wailed

According to 400m and Sydney 2000 Olympics silver medallist, Anefiok Udo-Obong, Nku was a martyr of sort. “In as much as Onyali emerged winners in the 100m, Nku presence would have changed things quite much” he confessed

“I think she wasn’t treated right for what happened and I want to believe she was suspended to aid onyali no matter what people say. She’s done her best and should have been pardoned. No one I repeat, there’s no female sprinter here in Nigeria that can stop Nku in her race” the eloquent Anefiok concluded
