Martins' goal decides cup clash

celebrating Martins
Inter Milan last night beat Atalanta 1-0 in a dull Coppa Italia quarter-final first-leg encounter at a freezing Atleti Azzurri d'Italia Stadium thanks to Obafemi Martins' 72nd-minute goal.

On for Recoba in the second half, the Nigerian International immediately added verve to the Nerazzurri's game and left his mark after eleven minutes.

Receiving a forward pass from Veron, Martins elegantly turned Sala on the edge of the Atalanta box then lifted the ball over Calderoni to notch his fourth domestic cup goal in two games.

Recall he scored a hatrick at home against Bologna. After the game Obagoal said "I'm pleased, it's an important goal. This season has certainly been positive for me so far.

I'm in form, I'm playing well and I'm scoring goals," said the Nigerian, who took his tally for the season to fifteen goals.
"It was a difficult evening because it was very cold. This pitch caused problems for us and them.

But I'm pleased I scored this goal. Let's start thinking about Palermo now. It will be a difficult game but we want to win it and do well."

No doubt the young Nigerian striker is proving himself against the most rugged and stingiest of defences in the Serie A. This in addition puts in the right frame of mind for the near future challenges on the international front for Nigerian Super Eagles in the March, 2005 African Nations Cup/World Cup Qualifiers, and to a great leap to achieve a feat as the back to back winner of the CAF Young Player of the Year come February 23, 2005 in South Africa. Bravo to the Nigerian and African soccer prodigy.

Yea, Obagoal is on fire. How I wish he was born in England where there is oppotunity for national team having friendly matches. For sure he will do better before the resumption of the world cup qualifiers. But this is nigeria where the fire service approach is our watch word.
Almost the teams around the world are playing friendly matches to be in tune for the games ahead,it is only Nigeria that will be waiting for miracles on the field of play.It is high time for NFA to put up series of friendly matches for the Super Eagles or they better be ready for a shocker.
