Onyinanya sticks with Pelican Stars

Oge Onyinanya
Pelican Stars of Calabar first choice goalkeeper, Oge Onyinanya has told nigeriasports.com that she would not leave her club of three years, Pelican stars of Calabar, saying she will remain with them for at least the 2005 football season.

Oge told nigeriasports.com that after spending three seasons with Pelican stars, she realized that all Nigerian clubs are the same and there will be no point joining another club in Nigeria where she will face similar trials and difficulties.

“I have played for FCT Queens and Pelican Stars and I have also watched the trend and I can say there is nothing I have gone through here that will be better in another club so why would I want to leave Calabar now?”

The goalkeeper who was Nigeria’s first choice at the 2003 All Africa Games, the Africa Women Championships in 2004 as well as the World U-19 World cup in Thailand last year said she had a good season with Pelican Stars in 2004 even though most times she was away on National duty.

“A lot of players may be thinking of moving because of the financial problems the club faced towards the end of last season but I know it won’t be better in other clubs.”

Pelican Stars ended up 2nd in the league last season and at the time of going for the Christmas break in December; players were owed four months salaries, a situation that led to more than a third of the squad saying they may not go back to the club.
