All set for Drover boxing Championship

All is now set for the maiden edition of the Drover invitational boxing Classics 'Champion of champions' boxing Championship billed to take place tomorrow saturday in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital reports nigeriasports.com.

In an interview with nigeriasports.com, the Secretary General of Nigeria Amateur Boxing Association(NABA),Francis Gbiri said that only 22 boxers will feature in the close bout which involues the Champion and runners-up of the 8<SUP>th</SUP> All Africa games amd national sports festival which was held  in Abuja last year.

According to him,"the boxers who will vie for honours in different categories include Jamiu Dada, Shittu Sarafa, Ahifa Aghogho, in the Light Flyweight Category while In the Fly weight category are Saidi Oladele, Osarim Lawrence, Oyeyinka and the Bantam Weight has Adebisi Kazeem, Eze Emmanuel, Adbullahi Abubakar,Jeje Sakiru.

He maintained that the aim of the one-day competition is to select boxers that will represent Nigeria at the next olympic games and Commonwealth games in 2006 and 2008 respectively.

"It is necessary we start preparing our boxers for all international competition and the national Festival billed for next year in Ogun State, adding that this is the only way we can keep them fit because we don’t want a repetition of what happen in Athens where three of our boxers got to the finals and could not win a medal".

Meanwhile, the championship was expected to be used to round-off the2004 Sporting year for NABA but was put forward due to logistics.

I think it's only Oyo state promoting Boxing in Nigeria, where are the other states? Like Swimming too, it's only River State. Please don't let the spirit ofBoxing perish in this Country. We are one the countries which make first batch in the Boxing World.
