NNPC Junior Tennis Circuit ends

The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Junior Tennis Circuit held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State came to an end on Sunday. In his brief remark at the closing ceremony, the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Funsho Kupolokun, who was represented by Austin Oniwon, managing director of Eleme Petrochemicals stated that the idea behind the circuit was to develop a ranking system for junior tennis in the country.

He added that it was also to create the right amount of exposure and opportunities for the youths in the exposure and opportunities for the youths in the exciting world of tennis.

“The thrust of NNPC’s sponsorship is to provide an avenue for the development of the innate abilities of our young people through the vehicle of sports,” he said.

He commended Godwin Kienka, director of International Tennis Academy for their excellent work in organising the circuit.

At the end of the five days tennis event, Biola Akewula who made it to the finals in three categories of age 12, 14, and 16 was declared the most valuable player in the girls category while Vincent Idoko from the co-foundation club, Kaduna who was runners up in the under 16 boys category was declared the most outstanding player in the boys category.

Other winners were Anthony Michael, who defeated Idoko in the under 16 boys category, Samuel Omoile, winner in the under 14 boys and Badmus Kareem in the under 12 boys.

Ikenna Okoro won in the under 10 category while in the girls category, Chika Okoro defeated Biola Akewula in the under 16. Chika also defeated Akewula in the under 14 category.

However, Biola Akewula consoled herself by defeating Lolia Kienka in the under-12 girls category.

Congratulatio to the Nigeria jr. tennis players . And i will like to thank the jr. tennis organisers as well.But i think it's about time for Nigeria to have a player(s) in the top 50 in the world (men or women)dont you think ?
