Globacom launches women proffessional league logo

The logo for Africa’s first ever women professional football league, sponsored by telecommunication giants, Globacom is now ready and will soon be unveiled at a glamorous launch.

This much was announced in Lagos by the NFA Women Football Development Committee after their emergency meeting.

Nigeria will blaze the trail next year when it launches the Globacom Women Professional Football
League(GWPFL) in the 2005 football season and already ,activities are underway to give the Women’s
Pro-league the much needed shine.

“Part of the things we did in Lagos last week was to look at the logo for the Women’s Pro-league and
approve it before submitting to our sponsors, Globacom” explained Bassey Koma Ekpo, member of the
NFA Women Football Development Committee.

Apart from the logo, the Committee is also working on the rules and regulations that will guide clubs who
will be part of history by featuring in the competition.

“Already, we are a semi-pro league but what we are doing is to formalize certain aspects of
professionalism in the league with emphasis on players development, regularized transfers and contracts, marketing and other aspects”, explained Bassey Koma.

Only recently, the Chairperson of the NFA Women Football Development Commiittee, Alhaja Ayo Omidiran hinted that Nigeria’s decision to go pro in women football has been welcomed by top officials of CAF who see this decision as wise and developmental.

“In South Africa, CAF Top officials were full of commendation for our efforts to go pro. They all see
this a big step in the right direction and we are not going back because soon as we start, all the
stakeholders will be the beneficiaries ”Alhaja Omidiran had said.

What is the difference between our professional and premier league? This sounds like just a change of name. Globacom has a logo for our premier league, How many clubs have this logo inscripted on their cheap rags that they call jerseys. Apart from the pages of the newspapers, where else do we see this logo. Not even in our different stadia where these matches are played. For me, such activities should not attract press coverage except if the press has nothing to write. .
