Heineken Open Tennis begins Friday![]() Tournaments organisers have yet to state individual prize monies, but spokesman of Nigerian Breweries plc, Edem Vindah, told nigeriasports.com Thursday in Lagos that the company has budgeted a total of 20million Naira (approximately 150,000 U.S dollars) for the tournament. “A total of N20million is being committed by Nigerian Breweries for the sponsorship of this year’s event. Of this amount, $50,000 has been earmarked as total prize money, ($30,000 for Men and $20,000 for Women)” Vindah told nigeriasports.com Vindah states that “the sponsorship of this event highlights the Heineken’s commitment to the development of tennis in Nigeria and Nigerian Breweries wish to discover and nurture future tennis stars. ” This would be Nigerian Breweries 35th straight year of tennis sponsorship in Nigeria starting with the Guilder All Nigeria Open Tournament which metamorphosed into the Heineken International Open five years ago. It follows the entry into the Nigeria lager market of the Dutch International brand and its subsequent investment in one of Africa’s most capitalised companies - Nigerian Breweries plc. Vindah also told nigeriasports.com that an “hospitality arena will be provided to create excitement around the tournament” which will run for two weeks from 15 - 30 October. It will be in two parts of Futures 1 and 2 with registered players also expected to tour historical sites around the Lagos environs. Vindah states that “Tennis is the communication arrowhead of the Heineken Brand in Nigeria and tennis sponsorship, being part of the Heineken Brand worldwide and association, is the key platform of the brand’s consumer relationship building, loyalty reinforcement and bonding programme. ” By Jo Benson 0
