Rivers Angels shock Pelican Stars

The shock result of the Bayelsa zone of the FA Cup was by no doubt Tuesday morning’s shock 1-0 defeat handed to highly rated Pelican Stars of Calabar by Rivers Angels Sports Club of Port Harcourt.

Jacinta Nwachukwu, herself a former player of Pelican stars got the lone strike in the 10th minute of the match played at the Yenagoa Sports Complex.

“I am so delighted and I’m happy we won,” Rivers Angels Chief Coach, Tunde Lawson told nigeriasports.com shortly after the match.

“Before the competition started, I looked at Pelican Stars as the only team that can stop me from topping the group but with this win it looks like we are home and dry.”

“Now we await the second placed side in the Kaduna center.” Coach Lawson enthused.

Nigeriasports.com reports that Pelican Stars played with the full complement of their team as Falcons returnees, Ajuma Ameh, Yinka Kudaisi and Pepetua Nkwocha all featured in the match.

We were robbed- Chiejine

Former Super Falcons attacker, Ifeanyi Chiejine told nigeriasports.com that she was not impressed by the victory of Rivers Angels over her team on Tuesday morning.

She told nigeriasports.com that the match was a complete sham and a disgrace to Nigerian football since according to her the referees were clearly playing for the Port Harcourt based side.

“Its not just about the goal we scored that was disallowed, its about the general conduct of the match officials. They should realize this is the FA cup and teams should be on level ground and not a home match for Rivers which would allow them to rig the match in their favour.”

Ifeanyi insisted that Pelican Stars played better but they had to contend with not just Rivers Angels but the referees.

Ajuma Ameh advised that the NFA should make the competition interesting by ensuring that the referees are fair.

“It is not good for the game. The referee really played for Rivers Angels and I think he was on commission.”

After Jacinta got the curtain raiser in the 10th minute, Linda Chukwudi scored what looked liked an equalizer for Pelican Stars but the center referee disallowed the goal after first pointing to the center.
