Amano’s Rose wins Sailing competition![]() “I smile because I’m alive and happy to be interviewed by a beautiful journalist like you. My tears are ‘tears of joy’ which you should understand after such a tough competition,” Amano told nigeriasports.com at the terminal point - Whispering Palms Beach Resort - Badagry. Amano clocked 5hrs. 7mins to emerge winner and carted home a giant 21" coloured TV set and trophy to the bargain as the top prize. He was tailed to the Palms Beach by Tunde Bamire onboard the yacht MV. Lesser Tiger in 2hrs. 24mins. Bamire took home a 21" coloured TV set for second prize. Third position went to Okolo onboard MV. Dorothy in a time of 5hrs. 32mins. Strangely enough, for a competition running since 1994 this year’s was the first edition with prizes made possible by the beverage giants, Nigerian Breweries plc. “We like to identify with success because we are a successful company. But more than that, we like also to encourage sports and you are very well aware that Nigerian Breweries is involved in all facets of sports in our country from Soccer to Track & Field, Cycling, Chess, Scrabble, you name it; we are involved. It is with the same zest and spirit that we decided to be identified with the Nigerian Navy who are doing a tremendous job in keeping its officers and men in top physical condition,” Larry Agose, Public Relations Adviser to the brewery told nigeriasports.com in Badagry. Captain Omole, Chairman of the Navy Sailing Club who acknowledged that “indeed things have improved tremendously” also appealed to the beverage giants to continue with its “helping hands” to enable competition grow bigger in the “coming years.” With a total of 12 yachts participating, up from a mere 4 in 1994, Captain Omole told nigeriasports. com that “it was a fitting end to a beautiful competition, especially since we didn’t record a single mishap on the seas.” Two yachts however did not make it to the Whispering Beach “due to technical failures,” Omole said. Badagry, the terminal point of the competition was a major slave port during 400 years of slavery between Europe, the Americas and West Africa and it has also become a tourists city in the Nigerian tourism blueprint. The city has the oldest story building in Nigeria (more than a century old) which was used primarily to “store” slaves before their “export” from the west coast. By Onyinyechi Anyanwu 0
