Nigeria high commision snub Falcons

Falcons in training
The Nigerian female team to the African Women championship, South Africa 2004, are strictly on their own here in Jo'burg, nigeriasports.com can report.

The Dr Tunji Olagunju led Nigerian embassy in South Africa has informed the Falcons in clear terms that the embassy is in no way financially bouyant enough to render any kind of assistance to the team.

According to a top official of the Falcons, the embassy has informed us that we are strictly on our own.

"We went to them to see how they could help in the area of feeding the girls with our local dishes as many of them do not admire the food they are being served at the hotel but to our rude shock, we were told that their allocations are not forthcoming and even they themselves the officials are only struggling to survive".

"The pounded yam, Eba with the various soups like Oha, Okro and banga you see us eat were bought with our own money. The embassy told us that there are so many rich Nigerians here in South africa who can afford to feed the team throughout the duration of the competition and some of them have actually been doing their best for the team. We have eqaully been receiving food and drinks from some concerned Nigerians here while other various gift items are also been donated to us.

Nigeriasports.com noticed two Nigerians in particular who have consistently, in the last one week, bringing foods and drinks to the team.

Adolph Omobude, the chairman of Edo club international, a charity organization and Tony Uhunarabona, who himself was a former footballer with Insurance and NEPA of Benin but now a business man have been paying the team consistent visits.

Adolph Omobude who is into computer software business and has been in South Africa for the past 10 years said he is very much impressed with the Falcons. "I am so happy seeing them doing well and propagating Nigeria to the world. I promise to do more withy every victory", he assured.

On his part, Tony Uhunarabona, a computer engineer, said he is doing all that just for the love of the game. "Once a footballer, always a footballer and I feel great to be associated with the Falcons.
Nigeriasports.com learnt further that the duo freely donates sim cards and recharge cards to the team.

Report by Opatola Adewole, Jo'burg South Africa.
