Nigeria maul Algeria 4-0

The Nigerian female football team kickstarted their campaign at the 4th African women championship, South Africa 2004 on a bright note dismissing their Algerian counterparts 4-0, reports nigeriasports.com.

The Falcons as the Nigerian team is called, started the match on a rather cautious note and were only able to break down the Algerian defence after so much attempt in the 40th minute of play as right full back, Felicia Eze scored from the right after the Algerian goal keeper, Laouadi Naima parried her pull-out into the net to send the crowd, 95 percent Nigerians into wild jubilation.

The first half ended with the Nigerian goal keeper, Precious Dede having little to do as the Algerians mainly defended all through only relying on occassional breaks to get into attack.

The Falcons came out smoking in the second half and immediately recorded the 2nd goal through Ajuma Ameh as she side stepped an Algerian defender in the box to drive home in the 50th minute.

The Algerians swung into action almost immediately winning a corner kick from a rare mistake by the Nigerian goal keeper as she fumbled with a seemingly harmless shot in the 55th minute. The Algerian captain,Laouadi Naima, easily the best player in the team hit the Falcons cross bar from the resultant corner kick and that jolted back the Nigerians into action with Perpetua Nkwocha blasting wide infront of a yawning net in the 59th minute.

Perpetua Nkwocha however made up for the miss as she recorded Nigeria's 3rd goal in the 60th minute with a wonderful solo effort which saw her dribbling past a helpless Algerian goal keeper to put her name on the score sheet.

Titi Mekuleyi came on for Ajuma Ameh in the 70th minute and she was instrumental to the 4th goal scored on the nick of full time by Vera Okolo, the new Falcons wonder girl whose goal easily became the most beautiful of the day as she left her Algerian marker in her wake before unleashing a powerful screamer into the roof of the net.

Kikelomo Ajayi, the Nigerian captain said she hopes God can see them through another glorious championship while chief coach, Godwin Izilein sounded more confident. "Ghana, South Africa and the rest are well respected by us but we are not yet ready to surrender our reign of Agrican football".

The Algerian coach said it all with his acceptance of the superiority of the Nigerian side. "We were overwhelmed here today by the defending champions and it is not surprising considering their  pedigree.
