Nigeria warm up for Rugby World Cup

The Nigeria Rugby Football Union has began preparations for the 2005 7-A-SIDE Rugby World Cup (African qualifying series) scheduled for Tunisia from 25-26 September. Ntiense Williams, technical director of the Union told Nigeriasports.com in Lagos that the National 7'S Rugby team will soon be called to camp three days before their departure for Tunis.

Players are in two different camps in the Northern city of Kaduna and the Lagos National stadium where they are going through the "7’s drills." According to Williams, who is also the IRB Coaches Trainer for Nigeria.

The 16-Man Team will hit camp on Tuesday, 21 September at the National Institute of Sports in Lagos to start the final phrase of their preparations. Williams told nigeriasports.com

"This is the first time Nigeria are invited to an IRB 7’s RWC qualifing series and this was only made possible thanks to our participation in the last two African Rugby League competitions in Mali where Nigeria was adjudged the African team of the future and in Togo where we won."

He stated that "Nigerian Rugby players stand a better chance as 7’s Rugby is a more fast flowing, running and exciting game that suits the smaller bodied Nigerians."

Meanwhile, the confederation of African Rugby will converge in Nigeria from next October 10 – 17 for the finals of the 2004 African Rugby Leagues, which has Mali, the winners of the Southern qualifiers coming up later in September in Botswana and the host Nigeria for a 4-Nation African Rugby Finals.
