Kwara sports boss decries Olympics failure

Kwara state sports commissioner Mr. Bayo Alao, has blamed the poor performance of Nigeria at the XXVIII Olympic Games – Athens2004 – on lack of “exposure and inadequate preparations” towards the Games.

Alao told nigeriasports.com in Lagos that the country must learn a huge lesson from “this disgraceful outing in preparing for future Games.”

He believes that now is the time for “Nigeria to start the preparation for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.”

“It is really a shame that Nigeria cannot win a single medal (all hopes are not yet lost though). It shows the level of poor preparation towards the Games. The lack of exposure for our athletes is also reflected in this poor outing. We must now start the preparation for the 2008 Games in China,” Alao told nigeriasports.com

Alao notes that the only “panacea for athletes migration to Europe and the United States is for the Nigerian sports administrators to tap the abundant natural talents in the country and give them the very best treatment to make life comfortable for them to compete here. The Sports Ministry must also provide adequate training facilities for the athletes to train with in Nigeria and not just pay lip service to their demands.”

nigeria performance in the athens olympics is nothing to write about , the administrators failled us , they were no tacticians at all, firstly, how could they allow our boxers to embarked on training tour to Cuba? knowing fully well that, boxing is one area whiere the cubans relied on, so they should have knew that national interest comes first, they just expossed our boxers , the fact that, they went there during the AllAfrican Games preparation dose not mean that, they should return to Havana. Athens was a different ball Games. Cuba is participating . they should use there tacts next time and start preparation for the 2008 Olympics in earness. i resereve my comment on Athletics till next time . El-amin Aratumi was a former national junior champion and former armed forces recoed holder in 200m and 400m.
