Nigerian Boxer in Quater-finals

Nigerian boxing sensation, Muideen Ganiyu is just a step away from the medal zone of the boxing event at the ongoing Athens 2004 olympics, nigeriasports.com reports.

The pacy and highly determined Nigerian boxer earlier today defeated Khumiso Ikgopofung from Bostwana in the 57kg of the 2nd round knockout stage of the boxing event to keep hopes of a posible medal alive in the event.

The Nigerian who had drawn bye in the first round, sent out his African foe with a 25-16 points victory to set a date with Korea's Kim Sum Gyum in the quater-finals.

The left handed puncher therefore remains the only bright spot in a badly dented image of Nigerian boxing after 5 out of the 7 boxers Nigeria took to the olympics had been shown the way out of the competition.

The most surprising being the duo of Emmanuel Izonritei the Nigerian captain fighting in the heavy weight category and Isaac Ekpo who replaced highly favoured Albert Jegbefumere in the country's line-up.

Others like Gbenga Oluokun in the super heavy weight and Effiong Okon in the fly weight have also found the going too tough to cope with. Muideen Ganiyu stands a chance of picking up at least a bronze medal if he ends up subduing his Korean opponent in the quater-finals.
