Lagos to Lease out Teslim Balogun Stadium

LAGOS - The Lagos state government is set to lease out the unfinished multi-million Naira Teslim Balogun Stadium, situated opposite the National Stadium in Surulere to any corporate organisation interested in making use of it for any kind of business till further notice. Speaking with nigeriasports.com in Lagos Thursday, the Commissioner of Youths and Sports Bamidele Opeyemi, said the state government would handover the stadium to any organisation “interested in keeping the it busy.” “Right now we have set up a 5-Man-Committee to handle the issue. What we intend doing is to handover the stadium to an organisation or company that would pay us some money and make use of the stadium for some years before handing it over back to us. I believe this will help us to complete the building of infrastructures there,” Opeyemi, a lawyer and former student activist told nigeriasports.com According to him, the idea of leasing the stadium out to a corporate organisation was borne out of the need to enable the government raise funds towards the completion of project, stating that it would require an additional five billion Naira to get the stadium to a usable level. “As you must be aware by now, the stadium project has already gulped N1.5 Billion, an additional N5 Billion is required to complete the entire project. That is why we’re looking at the prospect of leasing to raise the required funds,” Opeyemi told nigeriasports.com Opeyemi says the government expects private football clubs in Lagos and other companies like banks and the oil industry to have a look at the property located in a choice area of the metropolis. Its a big shame that the lagos state govt can not even finish thier own stadium project. Lagos state is one of the well known states in nigeria and a lot of foreign investors and business men leave there. its a shame that they dont have their own stadium. Other states like oyo, edo, enugu etc have their own stadium but its only lagos. The governer of lagos need to change thier approach to sports and invest in it. Lagos state is full of talented footballers and thier is no quality stadium for them to display thier skills. Onikan stadium is old and the playing pitch is not good enough, this is what made julius Berger fc to move to Abeokuta. The lagos state govt really need to embrace sports and build infastructures for it to progress.
