Maku, Stancik in 1st round win

LAGOS - Nigeria’s Sunday Maku, Monday gave fresh hope that there was still some tennis left in him with a straight sets 6-2, 6-4 win over compatriot Samuel Jonah, (a wild card entrant) at the ITF Futures 3 going on at the National Tennis Centre, Lagos reports nigeriasports.com Seeded 8, Maku had crashed out at the first round during the Futures 2 last week to Abromovich Omer, of Israel. But after Monday’s game, Maku, a Davis Cup player told nigeriasports.com that it was the beginning of a new phrase in his career. “This is a new beginning for me and I hope to get to the finals. I have learnt my lessons and my game have improved,” he said. Futures 2 winner, Ghanaian Henry Adjei-Darko plays Beninoise qualifier Roman Setomey, in first round match at the Centre Court Tuesday. Adjei-Darko, who defeated Roger Anderson of South Africa 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to win last week’s event, believes he is on line for an encore. Number 2 seed, Jan Stancik of Slovakia dropped a set before mustering power to over come a wild card Nigerian entrant Candy Idoko, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2. Following in the triumph of his compatriot, another Ghanaian wild card entry, Salifu Mohammed defeated Israeli qualifier Iram Peled, in straight sets 7-6, 6-3. By Julie Anyanwu
