El Moutawakel heads IOC 2012 ‘Evaluation’ team

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Tuesday announced the composition of the “Evaluation Commission” which will visit the five Candidate Cities to host the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012. Chairmaned by the Moroccan Los Angeles ‘84 Olympics women 400m Hurdles champion, Nawal El Moutawakel the team, composed of representatives of the Olympic Movement and experts, will analyse the candidature files that Paris, New York, Moscow, London and Madrid would have submitted to the IOC by 15 November, 2004, and make inspections on site and issue a report one month before the election of the host city in Singapore on 6 July, 2005.

“The Evaluation Commission plays a key role in assessing the Candidate Cities ability to host the Olympic Games. We have here an excellent team, and I am particularly pleased that Nawal El Moutawakel, has accepted to lead it.

As a former Olympic champion, she has a great knowledge of the Olympic Games and what it takes to organise them. The experience that she has gained from working closely with the Moroccan government in promoting sports, as a member of the IAAF Council and as a member of numerous IOC commissions will be real assets to the Evaluation Commission,” IOC president Jacques Rogge, said at the inauguration. Members of the Commission are: Mrs Els van BREDA VRIESMAN (NED) Paul HENDERSON (CAN) Patrick JARVIS (CAN) Mustapha LARFAOUI (ALG) Joséé Luis MARCO (ARG) Ser Miang NG (SIN) Sam RAMSAMY (RSA).

The following are ‘Experts’ members Simon BALDERSTONE, Philippe BOVY (SUI) Bob ELPHINSTON (AUS) El Moutawakel was the first woman from an Islamic nation to win an Olympic medal and the first Moroccan athlete to win a gold medal. Her outstanding sporting career and her dedication to sport led her to become a member of the IAAF Council in 1995; Secretary of State, responsible for Youth and Sport, to the Minister of Social Affairs in Morocco in 1997; and an IOC member in 1998.
