Ministry suspends Judo officials The suspension of the two including one Dolores Omite,an assistant secretary in the Nigeria Judo Federation[NJF] comes on the heels of the discovery of their alleged involvement in visa racketeering. "Both Gloria and Edokpolor have been ordered back home from the Olympic training camp in Germany,"a source at the Federal Ministry of Sports told nigeriasports.com."The move was to pave way for a carefull investigation of the scandal and for the accused to defend themselves." Ekwempu and Edokpolor were said to be engaged clandestine sale of visa,obtained under false pretense from foreign embassies in Nigeria,to persons other than sports men and women. The cookies,it was learnt,crumbled for the syndicate when they played into the hands of an agent of the State Security Service[SSS] who had masqueraded as a usual customer. The source revealed:"They have the habit of trading travelling visa whenever there are big time competitions abroad,especially in Europe. "This time around thgey decided to latch on the opportunity provided by the fact that Team Nigeria is training in Germany ahead of the Olympics. What they now did was to charge members of the public who are desperate to travel the sum of N300,000 each,just to help them procure visa to Germany. "Some people felt they'd been denied the benefits of this scam for too long and they decided to squeal.Actually the SSS man was supposed to be the seventh customer on the list of the syndicate." Ekwempu was alleged to have slumped on realising that the person she was transacting business with was a security agent.She later regained consciousness in a private hospital. Indeed not a few have wondered how the NJF Secretary-General who is a spinster manage to maintain a fleet of three cars and a posh apartment in a highbrow area of Lagos,in a country where salaries of civil servants at her level barely manage to take them home. 0
