Six Nigerians in 100m finals

NIGERIA had cheering news on the opening day of the African Championships in Congo Tuesday with both its men and women sprinters finishing 1-2-3 in the semi-finals of the 100-metre. Nigeriasports.com can report.

The Nigerians who hope to use the Championships to qualify its mean and women 4 x 400 metres teams returned slow times by their own standards, but was good enough to make the finals on Wednesday.

Olu Fasugba, 10.23secs took the lead in Brazaville on this opening day followed by the United States based Aaron Egbele, 10.36secs.

The winner of the Abuja event Tamunosiki Atorudibo, 10.38secs was in third position. His time in Abuja was 10.17secs.

Endurance Ojokolo, whose 11.17secs in Abuja was described as slow, took the front position in a much slower time of 11.40secs. Mercy Nku, 11.45secs and Damilola Osiyemi who was the surprised sprinter of the Abuja meet came out in that order.

 Dan Ngerem, president of Athletics Nigeria and leader of the team to Congo told nigeriasports.com on phone from the venue that it was a heard warming results.

“This is a cheering news from our athletes. It shows that there is hope in this country after all. I think they could do well and I only pray they finish so in the final coming up tomorrow,” Ngerem said.

The Nigerians are expected to leave the Congo for Stuttgart, Germany where they would continue their training programme in the build-up to the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
