Utondu storms Mobil after four years absence

Former female sprint sensation, Beatrice Utondo-Okoye was among the foreign-based burning the tartan tracks of the Abuja National Stadium in this year’s Mobil Track and Field Championship aimed at selecting the country’s team to next month’s Athens Olympics. Nigeriasports.com can reveal.

Beatrice, who featured in the sixth heat amidst drizzling, finished third in 11.95 seconds behind Joy Digha of Delta State and Omoloye Omolara that completed the event in 11.73 seconds and 11.77 seconds for the first and second positions respectively.

Remarkably, Beatrice who has dropped her spikes shoes since four years back to attend to her education, (she now has PhD in psychiatric) told nigeriasports.com soon after the event that was almost marred by drizzling that she had worked hard to feature in the trial to ensure being in the country’s team to next month’s Athens Olympics.

The psychiatrist, whose performance in the heat was remarkable, was confident of making it to the final that is scheduled to be decided on Saturday.

“I have really worked hard to grab one of the slots for the Games. I will not in any form under rate the up and coming athletes because they (rookies) have something to offer. I would have come for the 8th All Africa Games, but I sustained injury while training.

“The ugly injury reared its ugly head again when I was involved in a car crash, and it affected my early training and build up for the Athens Olympics trial. I’m still feeling some pains. But my doctors have given me a clean bill of health to train and compete in any event”, she said.

Beatrice, who has featured in three previous Olympics, said she hopes to make the team to Athens to make it her fourth Olympics.

While responding to issue on retiring, the muscular psychiatric said she would continue to run until her muscles signaled that it was all over.
