Delta set new record

Amid accusations of cheating levelled against Plateau, Rivers, Abia and Anambra states at the on going Nkoyo Ibori Athletics championshipin Calabar, Delta State's Endurance Abinuwa on Thursday set a new record in the 400-metres hurdles for women erasing the old record of 59.22, set by Alimot Ismail of Kwara at the 2002 edition. Nigeriasports.com can report.

Abinu beat all comers to win the race at 58.75.

Like every young athlete participating at the event, Abinu thanked Delta state first lady for the opportunity to better her record said her success was the result of hard work, dedication and the encouragement of her coaches.

“There’s never any shortcut to success and this much I know. I pray God continue to bless the first lady of Delta State” she told Nigeriasports.com

“I hope I can get the support of everyone to realise my dreams and potentials at the international stage” Abinu concluded.

Meanwhile, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Techical Director, Abdulkarim Amu has accused the quartet of Anambra, Rivers, Plateau and Abia of cheating by luring back athletes who were disqualified during the screening to compete in some events.

"The complaint was that they tried to field ineligible athletes who were disallowed at the screening before the tournament".  As a punishment for what he described as an "unholy act", the states would suffer a reduction by 50% of what they are entitled to in form of transport claims” Amu said.

Amu stressed that the AFN has vowed to do everything humanly possible to erase cheating from all participating states.

“It’s a great feeling when you know you’ve won without any fuss. Cheating is a disease that needs to be checked” he concluded.
