NBB of C Clears Capital Promotions for World Title

LAGOS: The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control today, June 30, announced its approval for Capital Promotions, a USA based boxing promotion outfit to hold a world class boxing bout in Nigeria. The event is tentatively billed for September 18, 2004 at the Abuja National stadium. This ends months of speculations as to whether the organisation has any right to hold such event in Nigeria.

According to the General Secretary of the NBB of C, Mr. Trigo Egbegi, the promotion outfit had earlier slated the International title bout between Mike Moorer and Rob Calloway for May without meeting the conditions for promoting such event according to the rules of the board for which the board had to put up a disclaimer.

“Interestingly, the promoters realised their fault and properly approached the board. They have complied with the statutory demands of the board and we are excited to work with them to make the event a success. After we agreed with them the event was re-slated for June 19, but it could not hold because Rob Calloway who had challenged Moorer lost a fight and was therefore no longer eligible to challenge Moorer, the International Boxing Association heavyweight champion. It is for this reason that we opted for a new date in September to give room for some re-shuffles and proper planning,” he said.

The president of Capital Promotions, Mr. Paul Scieszinski in giving details of the event revealed that four bouts would be among top rated US fighters while two would be title fights among Nigerians.

Besides bringing world class boxing entertainment to the Nigerian public, Paul Scieszinski explained that the interest for Capital Promotions venturing into Nigeria is to spot and expose Nigerian boxers to world class fights and give opportunities to gifted potentials to fight at the top levels.

Capital Promotions reputedly has world class boxers in its camp including having played a remarkable role in the promotion of then world heavyweight champion Evander Hollyfield.
